Writing for The Reading Teacher

The Reading Teacher (RT) is a peer-reviewed journal that provides research-based teaching ideas to literacy educators working with children up to age 12. RT’s reach is global, and the journal publishes articles covering topics such as applying research to classroom practice and using strategies to help all learners succeed. Topics may include but are not limited to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and programs for diverse populations of literacy learners.

Full-length articles and brief Teaching Tips are accepted for consideration through peer review. In addition, RT publishes informal, personal essays from classroom teachers for the non–peer-reviewed Voices From the Classroom feature (previously View From the Chalkboard).

RT is published online and in print six times a year: July/August, September/October, November/December, January/February, March/April, and May/June. It is received by more than 25,000 individual and institutional subscribers worldwide.

Appropriate Submissions for Peer Review

RT welcomes well-written, original descriptions of research-based instruction that improves literacy learning of children through age 12. Manuscripts must provide an appropriate blend of practical classroom application and solid theoretical framework and, where appropriate, include graphics (e.g., tables, charts, figures, photographs) that emphasize key ideas and add visual interest. The journal editors will not consider book reviews, literary analyses, class projects, term papers, dissertations, endorsements of commercial products/services, previously published works, or manuscripts under consideration elsewhere.

Full-length article manuscripts should run between 4,000 and 6,000 words (including main text, references, and required Article Sidebars [see below]), and should provide RT’s practitioner audience with classroom ideas for literacy development, based on sound theory and research.

Teaching Tip manuscripts should be 1,500 to 2,500 words in length and focus on a single, research-based application for improving literacy that can be readily implemented by readers.

Your manuscript will be judged on its contribution to the field, timeliness, freshness of approach, and clarity and cohesiveness of presentation. The acceptance rate is approximately 20%. Before submitting your manuscript, familiarize yourself with the voice, tone, and format typical of RT content.

Preparing Your Article or Teaching Tip

All submissions for peer review should conform to the style outlined in the APA 6th edition. All manuscripts must be submitted electronically to our online manuscript tracking system. Text should be presented double-spaced in 12 point font, in .doc, .docx, or .rtf files.

Short Paragraphs

  • Keep paragraphs short for better readability in the journal’s multicolumn format. Extremely short paragraphs of just a few sentences are fine and in fact preferred—keep in mind that a paragraph that runs 3 or 4 lines long in a Word document will run 8 or 10 lines long in the journal layout!

Organizational and Visual Appeal

  • Make every effort to include subheadings (up to 3 levels of subheads can be accommodated in RT), bulleted and numbered lists, figures and tables, or other visual elements in the text to increase readability and visual interest.

Required Elements for Articles and Teaching Tips

The following elements must be included:


  • Abstract of 100–150 words, written in the third person and without citations.
  • One blinded copy of the manuscript. To prepare this version, remove author names and affiliations from bylines, replace references to your own and to coauthors’ published work simply with “Author (year)” in text and in reference list (that is, delete publication titles), and mask any city, state, institutional affiliation, or links to personal websites.
  • All in-text citations and corresponding references must be in APA 6th edition format. Footnotes and appendixes should not appear. Instead, incorporate such material into the article text, figures and tables, or required Article Sidebars.

Figures and tables:

  • Tables should be embedded at the end of the manuscript. Figures should not be embedded inside the manuscript or separate Word documents but rather should be submitted as separate, original image files (e.g., jpg, pdf, tif, eps) with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. All figures and tables must be referenced in the manuscript, and figure captions can be inserted with their callouts. Teaser Text

  • At the beginning of the article or Teaching Tip, add “teaser text” to pique reader interest. This should not be an academic abstract but rather an article synopsis no longer than 30 words, written in third person. Please be sure the teaser text is noted as such in the manuscript.

Article Sidebars (not required for Teaching Tips)

  • At the beginning of every article, include a Pause and Ponder sidebar of three to five questions that encourage reflection among readers and may be used, for example, by discussion facilitators in school-based professional learning communities.
  • At the end of the article and before the references, include a Take Action! sidebar. Take Action! identifies the steps others need to follow to apply your ideas to literacy classrooms and programs. Please include a numbered list of steps (no longer than 200 words) that succinctly explains how teachers can implement the practical implications of your article.
  • At the end of the References, include a More to Explore list of no more than five or six additional, multimodal resources for readers interested in supplemental information on your topic. These should not include resources already cited and referred to in your text. Examples to offer include lesson plans from, books and journal articles, podcasts, and websites.


  • Ensure that your references are correct and complete and that they adhere to the APA 6th edition reference structures. NOTE: References will not be fact checked in copy editing; it is the author's responsibility to verify the accuracy of all references and their corresponding citations.
  • Ensure that references include complete author initials with no space between initials, ampersand for multiauthored works, year, full titles of books including edition/volume, page numbers for book chapters, month for presentations, volume and issue number for journal articles, etc. Ensure that authors for a single source are listed in correct order.
  • Pull literature titles out into a separate reference list (e.g., Literature Cited). NOTE: Literature that is mentioned but not actually cited does not need a parenthetical citation or inclusion in a reference list. Only if it matters which published edition of the book was used are parenthetical citations and reference entries needed.


  • Authors of accepted manuscripts must provide written permission releases for use of material from other sources (e.g., student work samples, text or figures excerpted from another published work). Releases must also be provided for use of any person’s words or likeness.

Preparing Your Voices From the Classroom Essay

Voices From the Classroom essays (formerly View From the Chalkboard) share readers’ reflections on teaching experiences, advice for new teachers, profiles of exemplary teachers and classrooms, perspectives on current issues in literacy and education, and more. These informal, non–peer-reviewed pieces (no scholarly citations or reference list, please) are written by elementary educators for elementary educators. Submissions should be approximately 500 words and include a corresponding image or photo, if possible. Note that releases must be provided for use of any person’s words or likeness. If your essay is selected for publication, you will receive a one-year, online-only subscription to any ILA journal for yourself or a colleague.

Online-Only Supporting Information

Authors are welcome to submit online-only supporting information to be published with their paper on Wiley Online Library. Supporting information must be important, ancillary information that is relevant to the parent article but that does not or cannot appear in the printed edition of the journal (e.g., audio or video files). Submitting Your Manuscript

All articles, Teaching Tips, and Voices From the Classroom must be submitted online through ILA’s Manuscript Central tracking system.

  • Go to the Manuscript Central site.
  • Create an account (if you haven’t done so already).
  • Log in to your account with your username and password, and select the appropriate publication from the drop-down "journal" menu.
  • Click the Author Center link.
  • Click on the blue star and follow the instructions provided. Please note that all authors must be included as part of the submission.
  • A confirmation e-mail will acknowledge our receipt of your manuscript.
  • You can follow the progress of your manuscript by accessing your Author Center.

Review and Adjudication

The review process includes a preliminary evaluation to determine appropriateness, double-blind peer review, and finally adjudication by the editors. Teaching Tips are evaluated by at least two members of the editorial review board, and full-length articles are evaluated by at least three review board members.(Note that Voices From the Classroom is not a peer-reviewed feature.) Acceptance is determined by the reviewers’ recommendations, available space, and balance of topics in upcoming issues. A decision is typically rendered eight weeks from the date of submission. Publication date of accepted manuscripts is determined primarily by the amount of material already awaiting publication.


Authors of accepted manuscripts are required to assign their copyright to ILA so that the Association can register copyright to the journal as a whole and administer requests for reuse. (Authors are invited to read ILA's rights and permissions policies, which do not restrict authors' own reuse of their work.)

Accepted articles are edited to meet ILA style guidelines. Page proofs are sent to the author for final approval approximately six weeks prior to publication. All authors will receive a final PDF of their article for their records.

Early View

RT is covered by Wiley’s Early View service. Early View articles are complete, full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised, and edited for publication, and the authors’ final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue, or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting him or her to login into Author Services; where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS), s/he will be able to complete the license agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.
